4 Eco Services, a local plumbing, heating and air conditioning service company, advises homeowners to take active measures to keep their air conditioning unit in good condition. 4 Eco Services has recently received a high volume of calls from clients requesting emergency maintenance for their air conditioners; in most cases, the client has not properly maintained their unit.

Homeowners can take a few simple steps to ensure their air conditioning unit doesn’t suddenly stop working. These steps include changing or cleaning the air filter, cleaning the air conditioner’s coils, removing debris from the outdoor unit and straightening the coil fins.

Over time, the air filter becomes clogged and starts to block airflow, decreasing the unit’s efficiency and increasing energy consumption. Cleaning or removing the filter will help improve indoor air quality and ensure the house is kept cool.

Outdoor condenser coils can easily become very dirty if the environment is dusty or if there is foliage nearby. Homeowners should remove leaves, dirt and grass clippings that may build up on the surface of the unit and regularly trim shrubs and plants.

4 Eco Services General Manager Ian Williams says, “Like most home appliances, the air conditioner doesn’t get much attention until it has stopped working. We urge homeowners to clean and check their unit on a regular basis to help prevent emergencies, especially in the middle of summer.”
